The Function of Situational Awareness
- In large-scale incidents, the Situation Unit manages this function - gathering, analyzing, and distributing reliable updates.
- In business, that same function might be called the War Room, Operations Center, or simply the Executive Briefing Team.
Different names, same purpose: ensure everyone is operating from the same picture of reality.
Situational awareness gives leaders the clarity to anticipate instead of react.
Without it, even skilled teams end up making educated guesses - and guessing is not leadership.
In the standard ICS configuration, the Situation Unit is found within the Planning Section.

One of the benefits to a dedicated Situation Unit is to enable a consistent flow of situational awareness into and out of the incident management team.

Passing the same, unfiltered information onto others doesn’t add much value.
The information must be documented before it is analyzed to determine its usefulness.
SAR example:
A team operating without an updated map of flood zones risks sending rescuers into rising waters.
Business example:
A leadership team operating without current financials risks investing in markets that no longer exist.
In both cases, the absence of awareness turns strategy into luck.
