Hazardous Materials Awareness for SAR Responders and K9 Teams

Search and Rescue responders often find themselves in dynamic environments where hazardous materials are present – but not always obvious. This course prepares you to recognize those risks, respond appropriately, and keep both your team and K9 partners safe.

Designed specifically for SAR field responders and K9 handlers, this foundational course focuses on practical HazMat awareness – not hazmat operations.

You’ll learn how to:

• Identify HazMat threats using recognition cues and responder guides

• Establish safety zones and understand standard response protocols

• Navigate the complexities of working near contamination with a canine partner

• Apply basic decontamination procedures

• Operate within the command structure and communicate effectively

• Address legal, ethical, and welfare concerns unique to HazMat in SAR

You’ll also work through tabletop scenarios that help connect principles to real-world conditions.

This course is part of the SAR Responder Essentials certification track and helps ensure you remain mission-ready in uncertain or contaminated environments.
