Tracking and Clue Awareness Introduction

In April 2019, 2 hikers were reported missing in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains.

After five (5) days, alert and clue-conscious volunteers with the county’s search and rescue team located footprints they believed belonged to the missing hikers.   They recommended that air crews fly ahead to search the footprint’s direction of travel.

Clue Awareness and tracking is easily two of the most essential skills that a SAR Responder needs to be successful as a field team member.

This course will help searchers how and where to look for clues and also how to evaluate their relevance to the missing person search.

  • The skills covered in this course are useful for tracking criminals (fugitives, illegal border crossers, etc.), animals, etc.
  • However, this course is primarily intended for improving search results for people who are lost or missing and generally would like to be found.

Course Prerequisites:

As we covered in the Interior Search Strategy course, the most successful SAR responders focus their efforts on searching more than finding.

This ‘searcher’ mindset includes the understanding that clues are essential in any search, particularly if the missing person remains missing for an extended period.

This course will add more knowledge and more skill to your searcher tool kit.
